The Following is an American television series of the crime drama genre. The series was created by Kevin Williamson and produced by Warner Bros. Television and began airing on the FOX Network in 2013. The series is formatted as an ongoing miniseries with an initial season one order of fifteen episodes. The show stars Kevin Bacon as retired FBI agent Ryan Hardy, who is responsible for apprehending serial killer Joe Carroll (played by James Purefoy) back in 2009, though at great cost to himself. Now an alcoholic with a pacemaker, Ryan is called back in as a consultant as a string of murders begin cropping up that relate to Joe Carroll. Though Carroll is still in prison, he commands a group of followers to carry out his demands, which includes committing murders inline with his own modus operandi, as well as the abduction of his own son, Joey.

Notes & Trivia[]

  • Many of the plot elements of the series are derived from the works of Edgar Allan Poe, including crimes that are based on poems such as The Raven and the story The Masque of the Red Death. During the title sequence, a raven is seen flying off-camera, which is a reference to Poe's poem.
  • Actress Jeananne Goossen played FBI agent Jennifer Mason in the pilot episode, but her role was switched out early on and she was replaced by Annie Parisse, who played cult specialist Agent Debra Parker.
  • Kevin Williamson based the over-arching concept behind Ryan Hardy on that of Jack Bauer from 24, which is one of Williamson's favorite television programs.
