One day, in fifth grade, May's mom gives her a surprise gift - unicorn headphones. From the moment she sees them, she is excited to wear them to school, along with her matching shirt. Things go sideways when Michelle, the mean girl in fifth grade, and her friends, pick on her and say that she acts like a five-year-old. Michelle's initial argument is that unicorns are "imaginary," even though Michelle herself has an imaginary relationship with a boy that she likes. Two girls see May and tell her that her headphones are cool and that she should ignore the bullies.
