Doctor Who is a British science fiction television series and a revival of the original BBC Doctor Who which was produced an all new one-hour weekly television series in 2005. The series carried over from the same continuity of the original series, but with a brand new cast of characters. The program debuted with actor Christopher Eccleston playing the Ninth Doctor and Billie Piper taking up the role of the Doctor's companion, Rose Tyler. The first season of the show aired for thirteen episodes with Eccleston bowing out with the season finale. Taking his place as the Tenth Doctor was Scottish actor David Tennant. Tennant debuted at the climax of the series one finale "The Parting of the Ways" and made his first full appearance as the Doctor in the series two premiere, "The Christmas Invasion". Piper reprised the role of Rose Tyler for series two, but by season three she was replaced with a new companion, Martha Jones, played by Freema Agyeman. Freema only remained on the show through the first half of series three whereupon she was replaced by Donna Noble, played by Catherine Tate. In 2010, David Tennant ended his role as the Doctor and the part was picked up by younger British actor Matt Smith.
