King County deputy Lam Kendall.

Deputies are law enforcement officers working for an agency headed by a sheriff. They are sometimes referred to by the title sheriff's deputy, deputy sheriff, sheriff's police, or sheriff's officer, and are so-titled because they are deputized by the sheriff and charged with performing all the duties prescribed to the sheriff by that state's law. In some states a sheriff may not be a sworn peace officer, but merely an elected civilian official lacking police powers who oversees the department and its sworn peace officers. Law enforcement officers working for such departments may be subdivided, sometimes titled general deputy and special deputy.

On the TV series Eureka, a former US Army Special Forces soldier named Jo Lupo worked as the deputy of the town of Eureka, Oregon. This was a uniquely different jurisdiction from other deputies in that Eureka was an independent town with it's own Sheriff's department. Their superiors were members of the Department of Defense and they did not answer to any municipal or county government.

On True Blood, the character of Andy Bellefleur was the deputy of the fictional Renard Parish, Louisiana under Sheriff Bud Dearborne. He mostly operated out of the town of Bon Temps. After Dearborne retired, Andy became the new sheriff of the parish. Counter to his own nature, Sheriff Andy deputized Jason Stackhouse and the two became close friends despite having a contentious history with one another.
