"Yippie Kayak" is the tenth episode of season three of the police comedy series Brooklyn Nine-Nine and the fifty-fifth episode of the series overall. It was directed by Rebecca Asher with a script written by Lakshmi Sundaram. It first aired on the FOX Network on Tuesday, December 13th, 2015. In this episode, Jake asks Gina's help in picking out a Christmas gift for Charles. Boyle ends up going with them, and the three of them become hostages when a group of thugs hold up the store. Though most people would be terrified, Jake is thrilled, for now he gets to role-play his favorite action movie, Die Hard. Meanwhile, Amy Santiago tries to prove to Captain Holt and Rosa that she is not a wimp by accompanying them on a polar swim.

Allusions[]

  • Many elements of this episode are inspired by the 1988 action film Die Hard, starring Bruce Willis. Jake replaces the names of the gunmen with German sounding names ot reflect the German terrorists from the film. There is also a scene where Boyle saves the day while wearing a white, sleeveless undershirt, much the way that Bruce Willis wore in Die Hard.
  • Boyle's line, "Yippie Kayak other mothers" is a bastardization of the phrase "Yippie-ki-yay mother fuckers", as immortalized by actor Bruce Willis in the film Die Hard.
