For the character, see Temperance Brennan . Bones American television program of the crime procedural subgenre. Produced by Far Field Productions and Josephson Entertainment , it first began airing on the FOX Network on September 13th , 2005 . The series stars Emily Deschanel as Doctor Temperance "Bones" Brennan , a character loosely based on the life of real-world forensic anthropologist Kathy Reichs (who also serves as a producer on the show). Deschanel's co-star on the series is former Angel David Boreanaz , who plays FBI agent Seeley Booth . Temperance Brennan is the central character and team leader of the fictional Jeffersonian Institute Forensic Sciences Department and often works in partnership with Special Agent Booth to investigate crime scenes and solve murders. Supporting cast members on the series include Michaela Conlin , T.J. Thyne , Tamara Taylor , John Francis Daley and John Boyd. Former regular stars on the series include Eric Millegan and Jonathan Adams .
