"The Bad Fish Paradigm" is the first episode of season two of the comedy series The Big Bang Theory and the eighteenth episode of the series overall. It was directed by Mark Cendrowski with a teleplay written by Dave Goetsch and Steven Molaro based on a story treatment by Bill Prady. It first aired on CBS on Monday, September 22nd, 2008. In this episode, Leonard Hofstadter and Penny go on a date, but Leonard grows concerned when Penny wants to take things slow. Penny confides in Sheldon Cooper that she did not graduate community college, and wants him to keep it a secret. Uncomfortable with this arrangement, Sheldon instead elects to move out of the apartment rather than risk revealing Penny's secret to Leonard.

Allusions[]

  • The title of this episode is derived from a conversation between Leonard and Penny when they decide to "slow things down". Wolowitz compares this to eating bad fish, implying that this is a disaster point in the relationship. Even Leonard comes to accept the fact that he is the "bad fish" in the equation.
