Biography[]

Agatha Harkness is a witch from Salem, Massachusetts, who was accused of practicing dark magic by her own coven during the Salem witch trials. Several hundred years later in 2023, she became enveloped in the Hex, created by Wanda Maximoff. Unfazed by her thrall over the population, Harkness became fascinated and obsessed with attempting to harness Wanda's power.

Living under the pretense of the "WandaVision" sitcom, Harkness stole Ralph Bohner's house and posed as his housewife Agnes Bohner or simply Agnes, a seemingly innocent resident of Westview and Maximoff's nosy neighbor, all the while interfering with her idyllic paradise to her own benefit.

Upon realizing Wanda was the fabled Scarlet Witch, she attempted to absorb Wanda's powers for her own. However, Wanda defeats her and brainwashes her into becoming Agnes again in Westview. [1]

Notes & Trivia[]

  • Agatha Harkness is based on a character featured in Marvel Comics titles and is a supporting character in Fantastic Four related comics. She was created by writer Stan Lee and artist Jack Kirby and first appeared in "The Return of the Frightful Four" story from Fantastic Four #94 in January, 1970.
  • Unlike her television counterpart, the comic book version of Agatha Harkness was not an antagonist, but was actually a recurring supporting character. She was a babysitter to Franklin Richards and later a mentor to Wanda Maximoff.
  • It was Agatha Harkness who first declared that someone branded by the Darkhold as a Scarlet Witch is more powerful than the Sorcerer Supreme. In the modern timeline, the Sorcerer Supreme is Doctor Stephen Strange. Presumably, the Sorcerer Supreme referenced in the Darkhold is likely the Ancient One, who is purported to be several thousands of years old.
